RICHARD GLADSTEIN:
FILMCOLONY
Richard Gladstein is the President and founder of the Los Angeles-based motion picture production company FilmColony, Ltd. Formed by Gladstein in May 1995, FilmColony is committed to working with a broad range of distinct filmmakers to tell compelling and unique stories. In addition to a slate of projects in development at various studios, Gladstein's FilmColony has three films in post-production. Killshot, based on Elmore Leonard's classic novel, is directed by Academy Award®-winner John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) and stars Diane Lane, Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson, and Johnny Knoxville. Quentin Tarantino is the film's executive producer. Killshot will be released by The Weinstein Co. and MGM in 2007. Also in post-production is Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, which marks the directorial debut of screenwriter Zach Helm (Stranger Than Fiction, The Disassociate). Co-financed by Mandate Pictures and Walden Media, this magical family film stars Academy Award®-nominee and Golden Globe-winner Natalie Portman, two-time Academy Award®-winner Dustin Hoffman, Golden Globe-winner Jason Bateman and ten year-old newcomer Zach Mills. Lastly, The Nanny Diaries stars Scarlett Johannson, Laura Linney and Paul Giamatti. Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, the film is written and directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, the Oscar®-nominated duo behind the highly-acclaimed film American Splendor. Waiting to be released in theatres is Journey to the End of the Night, a thriller set in the streets and brothels of Brazil. The film is written and directed by Eric Eason and stars Brendan Fraser, Mos Def, Scott Glenn, and Catalina Sandino Moreno. FilmColony's most recent release was Finding Neverland, which was nominated for seven Academy Awards® in 2005 including Best Picture of the Year. Released by Miramax Films, the film was directed by Marc Forster (Monster's Ball) and stars Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet, Julie Christie, and Dustin Hoffman. Gladstein also served as the executive producer of the Miramax Films release of Duplez, a satirical black comedy directed by Danny DeVito and starring Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore. He also produced the Sony Pictures Classics release of Levity, which was written and directed by Ed Solomon and stars Billy Bob Thornton, Morgan Freeman, Holly Hunter, and Kirsten Dunst. Levity had its world premiere as the Opening Night film at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. Additionally, Gladstein produced Universal Pictures' blockbuster spy thriller The Bourne Identity, directed by Doug Liman and starring Matt Damon, Franka Potente, Chris Cooper, and Brian Cox. Gladstein's proudest achievement to date is Lasse Hallström's highly-acclaimed The Cider House Rules starring Tobey Maguire, Charlize Theron, Delroy Lindo, Paul Rudd, and Michael Caine. The film received seven Academy Award® nominations, including one for Gladstein for Best Picture of the Year. Michael Caine was honored with the Best Performance by An Actor in a Leading Role award and screenwriter John Irving won an Oscar® for his screenplay adaptation of his best-selling novel. Gladstein's credits as producer also include Robert Iscove's comedy She's All That, starring Freddie Prinze, Jr. and Rachel Leigh Cook; Anthony Drazan's adaptation of David Rabe's award-winning play Hurlyburly starring Sean Penn, Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright Penn, Chazz Palminteri, Garry Shandling, Anna Paquin, and Meg Ryan; and Mark Christopher's 54 starring Ryan Phillippe, Mike Myers, Salma Hayek, and Neve Campbell. Prior to the formation of FilmColony, Gladstein served as Head of Production for Miramax Films from 1993 through 1995, supervising the company's motion picture development and production. While at Miramax, Gladstein executive produced Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, Sean Penn's The Crossing Guard, and John Duigan's The Journey of August King. He supervised the productions of Robert Altman's Prêt-à-Porter (Ready to Wear); Wayne Wang's Smoke and Blue in the Face; David O. Russell's Flirting with Disaster; Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk Til Dawn; Gary Fleder's Things to do in Denver When You're Dead; and Four Rooms, the ensemble film from writer/directors Alison Anders, Alex Rockwell, Robert Rodriguez, and Quentin Tarantino. Before joining Miramax, Gladstein was Vice President of Production and Acquisitions at LIVE Entertainment from 1987 thru 1993. During those years, he was involved in the production and acquisition of such films as Bob Roberts, King of New York, Light Sleeper, and The Bad Lieutenant, as well as serving as Executive Producer of Reservoir Dogs. Prior to his tenure at LIVE Entertainment, Gladstein was the Director of Acquisitions and Distribution for Angelika Films in New York and prior to that, worked freelance on various television and film productions in New York.
