Eight years in the making, writer, director and star Nate Parker’s take on the life of African American slave Nat Turner’s life and the revolt he eventually led against the slave owners played at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to spectacular results. Parker’s debut as writer and director won the 2016 Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at Sundance. Parker used the title of D.W. Griffith’s well-known 1915 film as the starting point for his story. It follows the nineteenth century story of slave Nat Turner, and his evolution from plantation preacher to using the Old Testament for another means entirely—to begin a rebellion against those who owned and opposed slaves. The able cast Parker assembled includes Aja Naomi King, Gabrielle Union, Roger Guenveur Smith, Armie Hammer, Penelope Ann Miller and Jackie Earle Haley.

2016, 120 min, color, DCP | Written by Nate Parker; directed by Nate Parker; with Nate Parker, Armie Hammer, Mark Boone Jr., Colman Domingo, Aunjanue Ellis, Dwight Henry, Aja Naomi King, Esther Scott, Roger Guenveur Smith, Gabrielle Union with Penelope Ann Miller and Jackie Earle Haley
