Each year Film Independent accepts approximately eighty filmmakers from a highly competitive pool to go through our Talent Development Programs. These programs help filmmakers hone their skills, develop current projects, and advance their careers. The program is offered to filmmakers with strong, original voices, free of charge, and regardless of socio-economic background. Participants of Film Independent’s Talent Development Programs, including Project:Involve, Fast Track, the Filmmaker Labs, as well as the recipients of the Spirit Award Grants, and the Target Filmmaker Awards at the Los Angeles Film Festival all become Film Independent Fellows. Our Fellows represent the full spectrum of talented artists—over 70% are from backgrounds traditionally under-represented in the film industry.   

Fellows receive a complimentary membership to Film Independent, a pass to the Los Angeles Film Festival, and year round institutional support. Fellows also benefit from hands-on project development experience, access to film industry mentors, cash grants and scholarships, and in-kind donations of filmmaking software, equipment and/or film stock.

All of Film Independent’s programs work together to synergistically assist artists at each stage—whether they are working on a new script, seeking financing, devising a film festival strategy, presenting their work, or seeking careers in the film industry.  Fellows are mentored by experienced professionals, attend master workshops in the art of filmmaking, and benefit from intensive hands-on assistance and ongoing career placement support.
