Two young American women, Vicky and Cristina, who are best friends, spend a summer in Barcelona. Vicky is sensible and engaged to be married; Cristina is emotionally and sexually adventurous. One night, Juan Antonio, a handsome painter, approaches both of them with a brazen proposition. Vicky finds his proposal obnoxious, but Cristina is enchanted by his directness and charisma, and persuades Vicky to accompany her. Both are eventually enamored with Juan, yet are fully unaware that his ex-wife, Maria Elena, with whom he has a tempestuous relationship, is about to re-enter the picture.
