Synopsis
In Orthodox and Hasidic Jewish communities around the world, life is guided by religious laws and customs preserved for generations. One such law requires that a husband must grant a gett, or religious divorce, for a marriage to be formally dissolved under Jewish law.
When a gett is not granted, the marriage remains intact according to halacha (Jewish law), even if a civil divorce has been finalized. This can carry significant personal and communal implications, influencing family dynamics, community standing, and the ability to remarry within the faith. Disputes over a gett can stem from a wide range of circumstances, including ongoing negotiations, unresolved disagreements, or differing interpretations of religious obligations.
This film takes an objective look at the traditions, legal frameworks, and lived experiences surrounding Jewish divorce. Through conversations with rabbis, lawyers, advocates, agunot, and husbands involved in gett disputes, it seeks to present multiple perspectives and shed light on a complex and urgent issue.
