Bio
First time filmmaker Tessa Carmen DeRoy is Arlene’s niece and is currently the President of the California College Guidance Initiative. Her work has focused on expanding economic and educational opportunity, preventing the spread of HIV among young women and transforming systems to work in service of children, youth and families. She’s produced raves, testified in Congress, shaped education code in California and organized women on welfare to advocate for bank accounts that met their specific needs. Tess is compelled to tell her aunt’s story because she believes that we can all contribute to the change we want to see in the world.

Love and Justice: The Arlene Carmen StoryLogline
Arlene Carmen was the Administrator of Judson Memorial Church from 1967 to 1994. In partnership with Reverend Howard Moody, she ran the multi-denominational Clergy Consultation Service on Abortion, which connected 500,000 women to safe abortion care prior to Roe Wade, created a ministry for street walking prostitutes and distributed experimental treatments to early AIDS patients from the church garden room. Much of their work was illegal.
