After the sudden death of her only child, Mary’s world completely unravels. With help from some colorful characters and a pair of knitting needles, Mary must learn how to knit her life – and her heart – back together one stitch at a time before she loses everything.
Synopsis
The Knitting Circle is an adaptation of the novel by NY Times bestselling author Ann Hood. It tells the story of Mary Baxter, a woman struggling with the sudden death of her daughter. As Mary and her husband, Dylan, grapple with unimaginable grief, they find themselves drifting apart, each coping in profoundly different ways. Dylan manages to return to his daily routine, while Mary can barely get off the couch. The thought of returning to her job at the newspaper feels impossible. Writing was once her happy place, but now it seems as if all her words died with her daughter.
In an effort to reassure her increasingly worried husband that she’s trying to heal, Mary stumbles into a local knitting shop. Its endearing and slightly eccentric owner, Alice, introduces her to the art of knitting, passionately describing its healing power. Alice believes that knitting “calls to the brokenhearted.” Despite Mary’s initial resistance, Alice encourages her to join her weekly knitting circle – a group for people who, as Alice says, have “heeded the call of the needles.”
Desperate for a distraction and connection, Mary joins the circle and meets a diverse and quirky group of women, all of whom have their own stories of grief, loss, and survival. In their own way, each woman teaches Mary an important aspect of both knitting and healing, showing her that mending what’s broken — in yarn and in life — takes time, patience, and the willingness to start again.
If she wants to keep her life from completely unraveling, she’ll have to learn how to knit her heart back together one stitch at a time.
