Out of Office Series: Honeyjoon
Out of Office Series: Honeyjoon
We’re taking Film Independent Presents on a summer getaway… but don’t worry, we’re bringing the movies with us.
This August, settle in for a curated lineup of acclaimed new independent films, each paired with filmmaker conversations. Whether you’re watching from your couch or your own vacation destination, the Out of Office series is your passport to great independent cinema.
No commute. No dress code. Just great stories.
Film Independent Members, you and a guest are invited to watch Honeyjoon in the Film Independent Presents Online Screening Room, powered by Vision Media, followed by a pre-recorded conversation with writer/director Lilian T. Mehrel.
In this light-and-dark comedy, June and her Persian-exiled mom Lela take a trip to the romantic Azores islands for a grief anniversary, with contrasting ideas about how to grieve, how to live, and how tiny June’s bikini should be. Between happy honeymooners, doomscrolling Woman Life Freedom, and their charming hot-yet-deep surfer tour guide, João, these two women (and we, the audience) surf the waves of life, loss and flirting – an unforgettable ride. Honeyjoon is for anyone who lives with loss. For anyone who wants to feel free in their body. For anyone who has tried, and failed, to flirt.
From Utopia, Honeyjoon premiered at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival where it won the Tribeca AT&T Untold Stories Award.
Writer, director and producer Lilian T. Mehrel is a 2025 Film Independent Episodic Lab Fellow and recipient of the Sloan Episodic Lab Grant.
