Climate Storytelling: Warming to New Narratives

Issues of climate change have been the subject of education specials, TV series and documentary films since the threat of CO2 emissions became known more widely in the late 1950s. Over the next several decades, films and other programming spelled out the gloom and doom of various possible climate catastrophes, and successfully raised awareness about what could, and most likely would, happen in the future if we didn’t work to stop them.

Today, while most audiences are aware of and concerned about climate change, we lack dynamic stories about how we might respond to this existential threat. As artists, how can we best use our creative superpowers to fill the void?

This insightful panel will discuss how filmmakers are reclaiming the climate narrative through storytelling, and engaging and activating new audiences around climate stories and the systems that underlie them. Moderated by Plot Shift Media founder Kristen Schlott, filmmakers including Daniel Goldhaber (How to Blow Up a Pipeline) will discuss how their films tackle the big issues of our time in entertaining stories that help audiences envision pathways towards a more just and regenerative climate future.
