Film Independent Presents: Festival Visions is a new three-part series that shines a light on films discovered this year in regional film festivals across the US. We’re excited to present these exceptional titles that are currently without distribution and deserve to be seen by a wider audience.

You’re invited to join us for an online screening of Monarcas, followed by a pre-recorded conversation with director Diana Larrea, moderated by Lauren Cohen (Programmer, Miami Film Festival).

Monarcas was selected for Festival Visions in partnership with the Miami Film Festival and will screen alongside Finding Her Beat. (Also, no need to register for both of these titles – as long as you register for one film, you’ll be able to see both.)

In Florida, over one billion dollars in wages are stolen from the pockets of workers every year. Following the migration journey and metamorphosis of the monarch butterflies, the short documentary Monarcas tells the story of two Guatemalan undocumented day laborers, Pedro and Alejandro, who migrated from Central America in search of a better future for their families, only to have their wages extorted by a Miami roofer. They seek help from a local organization and navigate the complexities of court proceedings to regain their dignity. In the process, they became activists and organizers, helping others like them to fight for their rights, despite their immigrant status.
