Includes a conversation with director Rashid Johnson and actor KiKi Layne

Film Independent Presents the HBO Screening Series

Directed by conceptual artist Rashid Johnson and adapted by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks (Topdog/Underdog), Native Son created a sensation at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival for its piercing, contemporary take on the forceful anger that author Richard Wright first captured in his classic 1940 novel of the same name. Ashton Sanders (Moonlight) commands the screen as Bigger Thomas – with a look that demands he be noticed. When he lands a job that could change his life, his world seems to be improving… but is it? Though many things have changed for young African American men since the book’s inception, Native Son is a reminder that in many ways these issues still persist. The cast includes KiKi Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk), Sanaa Lathan (Love and Basketball), Margaret Qualley and Bill Camp.

2019, 108 min, color, DCP | Directed by Rashid Johnson; Written by Suzan-Lori Parks; With Ashton Sanders, Margaret Qualley, Nick Robinson, KiKi Layne, Elizabeth Marvel, David Alan Grier with Sanaa Lathan and Bill Camp
