Hitting the Right Note: The Art of Music Supervision and Clearances
The perfect needle drop can create a defining moment for any film.
Think “Layla” in Goodfellas, “The Sound of Silence” in The Graduate, or “Fight the Power” in Do the Right Thing. Like any well-placed piece of music, these songs can stir emotions, help build characters, or simply energize the audience, creating an indelible moment on screen. But how is the right song chosen? What are the creative discussions between director and music supervisor? And, once the song is chosen – most importantly – how do you get the rights to use it?
In partnership with Sony Music Vision, join us for a conversation about the creative and business side of music licensing. Through a case study of the Film Independent Spirit Award-nominated film Twinless, director James Sweeney and music supervisor Lauren Fay Levy will discuss their collaboration to achieve James’ vision for the film. They will be joined by Pace Rommel, VP of Sync Licensing for Sony Music, who will provide insights into the process of licensing music for film and TV.
