New York Screening: American Fiction

Film Independent Members, you and a guest are invited to join us for a theatrical screening of American Fiction, followed by an in-person conversation with writer/director Cord Jefferson, moderated by award-winning journalist Erik Davis.

American Fiction is Cord Jefferson’s hilarious directorial debut, which confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk, a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish “Black” book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.

The film was an official selection of the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and won the TIFF People’s Choice Award.

From Orion Pictures/Amazon MGM Studios, American Fiction will be released in theaters on December 15 (limited), December 22 (expansion) and January 5 (wide).
