In a 19th-century Colombian convent, an earthquake leaves the mother superior grievously wounded. In the days that follow, her body succumbs to a mysterious affliction, while she is haunted by enigmatic and mystical visions.

Synopsis

Ines (60) is the mother superior of an isolated rural order of cloistered nuns. Her life is spent in peace and quiet, devoted to observing God and preparing food for the impoverished local community. One day, she suffers an accident during an earthquake. In the aftermath of the event, mysterious ulcers begin invading her body, making her sick and weak. Along with her physical deterioration, she begins to hear a noise and to experience mystical episodes. The other nuns of the congregation, not knowing how to treat this mysterious condition, begin to feel afraid of Ines behavior, which completely change the environment and hierarchy of the convent. But this terrible and weird occurrence has helped the mother superior to experience her spirituality in an extreme and unprecedented way. Once Ines’ condition worsens to a breaking point, the nuns rebel and ostracize her. Having lost her community, Ines completely gives into her ailment and takes her mysticism to the limit.
