A coming of late age story that follows Sloane Williams, who at the ripe age of 32 is declared the family spinster and sets off on a journey of firsts to change her destiny in this Chewing Gum meets Insecure comedy.
Synopsis
At her sister’s engagement party, Sloane is dubbed the family spinster. During this rude awakening, Sloane realizes she’s been putting her life on hold since her father passed away. All for her family. So, Sloane enlists the help of her best friend Rochelle to help her on a journey of self discovery.
The world of dating is new to her, but Sloane dives in head first. While most folks do this at 16, Sloane is experiencing it all at 32. She bumbles through those big coming of age moments. We see her get her first kiss, first time having sex, and first “I think he’s my boyfriend but he’s actually not relationship.” Sloane learns how much of herself and her life she’s put on hold for her family but they’ve never thanked her for it. Through it all, she’s starting to lose more of herself. What was supposed to be a time of self-discovery, quickly spirals to Sloane distancing herself from the core of who she is. It all comes to a head when Sloane has a blow up with her family, Rochelle, and her situationship, causing the new pillars in her life to crumble.
By the end, Sloane realizes she can’t fully blame her lack of blooming on her family. Part of her understands that the reason she’s been so fearful to step out on her own is because of her own control issues. Sloane fears the unknown and making mistakes. She knows what it looks like when she doesn’t have control over everything – her mother breaking down without her husband, her sisters crying over their dead father. But as she slowly reconciles with her family, Sloane realizes she doesn’t have to be in control. She can make mistakes, everything isn’t life of death. Sloane can bloom.
