Logline

Out of the (dim) spotlight for 30 years, an ex-rockstar dad and his friend embark on a cross-country tour to perform their recent album to anyone who’s willing to listen…including his filmmaker daughter.

Synopsis

In the nineties, my dad, Jay, and his best friend Tim used to be in a band called Too Much Joy (TMJ). They almost achieved their rockstar dreams but never got their big break. I always wondered more about the life he once lived. When he and Tim reunite as a new group called Wonderlick, accompanying the duo on a tour hosted in old fans’ living rooms feels like my only chance to find out. This film follows their 7,600 mile cross-country odyssey. It also follows mine.

As a young person struggling to balance her dreams with the demands of adulthood, I enter the trip questioning how we can come back to our work after getting disillusioned by its setbacks. What can I learn about being an artist from those who have been doing it all their lives? Tim and Jay have questions for me and my camera: Are they deluding themselves? Is this whole experience just a cry for help?

This film is an investigation of what empowers people to test the limits of their comfort zones through a father’s courage to embark on a quixotic dream with his best friend. I went into this project eager to discover how to live a meaningful creative life through them and ended up learning a lot more about how to be a person. A way that is a little messy, a little cringe, but one full of love and understanding.
