Bio

Andrew James is a documentary filmmaker pursuing unique, American stories with an emphasis on character and place. In 2008, James completed his first film, Una Vida Mejor, a social awareness drama depicting the lives and struggles of migrant workers in Southern California. The black and white film screened at festivals worldwide and was the recipient of the Special Jury Prize for artistic vision at the 2008 Cinequest Film Festival. In 2009, James completed his first feature-length documentary, Cleanflix, about the rise and fall of the Mormon-born sanitized film movement. The funny and crowd-pleasing film had its world premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival before screening at more than 25 festivals around the world and winning the Best Documentary prize at New York United Film Fest. Cleanflix is now available on DVD, iTunes, Hulu and Netflix. James is currently finishing his second feature-length documentary, Street Fighting Man, about three men fighting for a better life in post-industrial Detroit. The film was selected for IFP’s Independent Film Week, Hot Docs’ International Pitch Forum, Sundance Institute’s Documentary Story and Edit Lab, and Film Independent’s Documentary Lab. For their work on the film, James and his creative team were listed as filmmakers to watch by The Independent. Street Fighting Man is scheduled to be completed in 2014.
