Queen Sugar is the venture from writer/director Ava DuVernay (Middle of Nowhere, Selma), her first cable television series for OWN, adapted from Natalie Baszile’s best-selling novel (DuVernay created the series). The show is about culture shock—more specifically, the shock of returning to a culture you thought you’d left behind. Charley Bordelon West (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) is a high-powered lawyer who’s also a visible part of one of Los Angeles’ best-known power couples; her husband is the biggest pro basketball star in the city, and their teenaged son is the thoughtful center of their relationship. When her world is rocked by a series of personal earthquakes, including a crisis involving her Louisiana family, Charley is forced to go home to the failing sugar farm run by her father. She has to manage the place, and her rapidly diminishing expectations, along with her crusading journalist sister (Rutina Wesley), and her struggling single parent brother (Kofi Siriboe). Episode 105 of the series will be shown. DuVernay, Winfrey and cast will take part in a Q&A after the screening.

2016, color, DCP | Executive produced by Ava DuVernay, Oprah Winfrey, Melissa Carter, inspired by the novel Queen Sugar by Natalie Baszile; with Rutina Wesley, Dawn-Lyen Gardner, Kofi Siriboe
