Programmers’ Picks: The Cartoons of Max Fleischer

Arts Circle, Film Lover, Secret (shhh…) Members and Fellows (with an active Membership), you and a guest are invited to Programmers’ Picks, a curated screening series taking place at the Film Independent Theater. Make sure to take advantage of your exclusive priority registration window, after which all Film Independent Members will have the opportunity to register.

Join us for The Cartoons of Max Fleischer, followed by an in-person conversation with Max Fleischer’s great-granddaughter Claire Fleischer (Membership Manager, Film Independent) and producer Mauricio Alvarado, moderated by Jenn Wilson (Senior Programmer, Film Independent).

Don’t miss this delightful program celebrating the classic animated films of Fleischer Studios – the pioneering animation studio, run by brothers Dave and Max Fleischer who were the first to introduce sound in animation and inventors of rotoscoping (tracing human movement from film), as well as the originators of Popeye, the first Superman cartoons and, of course, the most popular female cartoon heroine of all time, Betty Boop. This program includes cartoons from the 1920s and 1930s, lovingly restored from original film elements in 4K, spearheaded by Max Fleischer’s granddaughter, Jane Fleischer Reid. Learn about the studio’s influence and history, and enjoy these films the way they were meant to be seen – on the big screen!

Beverages will be served prior to the screening, starting at 7:00 pm PT.
