Roman Coppola Joins the 2027 Spirit Awards as Creative Consultant
Big news for the 2027 Film Independent Spirit Awards: filmmaker Roman Coppola is joining the team in a brand-new role as Creative Consultant, helping shape a unique creative vision for both the ceremony and the entire Spirit Awards experience.
Coppola will work alongside Film Independent’s production team to help define the tone, visual identity, and overall feel of the 2027 ceremony. He will draw on his experience as an award-winning director, writer and producer of feature films, documentaries, music videos, and brand work to build on the Spirits’ tradition of irreverence and originality while bringing in new energy and ideas.
His appointment is also an early step in the broader vision of Film Independent President Juan Devis, who is expanding the organization’s creative ambitions and renewing the focus on the Spirits as a true celebration of independent film culture.
As Devis explained, “The Spirit Awards have always celebrated artists who challenge conventions and find new ways to tell stories. We believe the Spirits themselves should embrace that same creative freedom. Roman brings a unique sensibility, a sense of play, and a willingness to experiment. We’re excited to work with him to rethink not just the ceremony, but the entire experience of bringing our independent film community together.”
More Than a One-Night Affair
Coppola’s influence won’t stop at the ceremony. He’ll help connect the events surrounding the show through a shared artistic vision, drawing on music, Los Angeles culture, and the Hollywood setting. Expect new partnerships and some unexpected collaborations throughout the season.
For his part, Coppola is excited about what’s ahead. “The endless inventiveness of cinema and the unique, diverse ways filmmakers find to express themselves are things I care deeply about,” said Coppola. “I’m looking forward to collaborating with the team to create a celebration that’s playful, adventurous, and full of surprises — one that will spotlight the remarkable voices that make independent cinema so vital.”
