Film Independent Presents: Festival Visions is a new three-part series that shines a light on films discovered this year in regional film festivals across the US. We’re excited to present these exceptional titles that are currently without distribution and deserve to be seen by a wider audience.

You’re invited to join us for an online screening of Runner, followed by a pre-recorded conversation with writer/director Marian Mathias, moderated by Mimi Plauché (Artistic Director, Chicago International Film Festival).

Runner was selected for Festival Visions in partnership with the Chicago International Film Festival and will screen alongside House of Tulip. (Also, no need to register for both of these titles – as long as you register for one film, you’ll be able to see both.)

The film was an official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022. Cinematographer Jomo Fray is a 2017 Project Involve Fellow and received Film Independent Grants & Awards in 2017 and 2019.

Haas is an 18-year-old girl who was raised by her father in the rural Midwest. When her father suddenly dies, she must carry out his wish to be buried in the town where he was born. There, she meets a young man named Will, a lonely, creative soul who is working to support his family back home. The two of them form a friendship that challenges both of their understandings of love and loss. Skillfully framing the vastness of the American landscape, and blending compassionate realism and cinematic poetry, Runner is a heartfelt story that captures a rare and meaningful bond between two young people as they step into adulthood.

2022, 76 minutes, color | Directed by Marian Mathias | Starring Hannah Schiller, Darren Houle, Gene Jones, Jonathan Eisley | Produced by Joy Jorgensen
