Fi Nonfiction Works in Progress: King of Oaktown

You’re invited to join us for a work-in-progess screening of King of Oaktown, followed by a conversation and feedback session with co-director/producer Shelby Baldock, moderated by Daniel Cardone (Nonfiction Programs Senior Manager, Film Independent).

The Film Independent Nonfiction Works-in-Progress Series offers documentary filmmakers a place to share their projects to receive constructive feedback.

Audiences have the opportunity to watch films as they enter the final stages of editing, offering feedback via in-depth surveys and moderated discussions, helping to ready projects for festivals and distribution.

Attendees will be asked to participate in the conversation following the film and fill out an anonymous questionnaire.

Beverages will be served prior to the screening, starting at 6:30 pm PT.

After losing millions forces him into homelessness, Derrick Soo picks up his iPhone and looks to social media. With unprecedented access to personal video diaries spanning over a decade, King of Oaktown offers an intimate portrait of Derrick Soo, an unhoused man documenting his struggle for purpose while navigating life on the streets of Oakland – the city his great grandfather helped build. The film is a soulful look into one man’s journey of resilience, rediscovery and search for meaning – before, during and after his audacious run for Mayor of Oakland in 2022.

Rough cut | Current edit contains temp music, rough sound design and mixing, temp color pass, and temp graphics | 96 minutes, color | Directed & Producer by Shelby Baldock and Tanner Matthews
