Free Members-Only Screening: Lady Bird

Includes a conversation with writer/director Greta Gerwig

With a before-the-cameras career that has taken her from mumblecore (Hannah Takes the Stairs, Baghead) to films that exist as drama (Jackie) to idiosyncratic comedy-drama (Greenberg, 20th Century Women, Maggie’s Plan, Mistress America) to the musical (Damsels in Distress) to starring in a film she co-authored (Frances Ha), actress Greta Gerwig has toiled with writer-directors with an almost instantly recognizable approach to their specific genre. And clearly observed each filmmaker’s way of workingfrom Mike Mills to Rebecca Miller to Whit Stillman to Noah Baumbachso much so that’s she’s making her behind-the-camera debut as the writer-director of the comedy drama Lady Bird, which stars Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan as the title character, a high school senior trying on personas (and names) to see which one fits, state that causes so much abrasion for her equally willful mom (Laurie Metcalf) one expects the screen burst into flame. There’s able assist from Tracy Letts as Lady Bird’s dad, and the guys in her life (played by Timothée Chalamet and Lucas Hedges). First time solo director Gerwig will be present for a Q&A after the screening.

2017, 93 minutes, color | Written by Greta Gerwig; directed by Greta Gerwig; with Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts, Timothée Chalamet, Lucas Hedges
