Almost twenty years after her galvanizing filmmaking debut – 1999’s Ratcatcher – which she followed with Morvern Callar, a provocative swirl of a murder mystery, writer/director Lynne Ramsay is back behind the camera. She adapts Jonathan Ames’ atmospheric short story to the screen, starring Academy Award nominee Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line) as Joe, a veteran who’s struggling to recover from his violent past as an FBI agent and soldier. His bent for self-medication has him mired in the underbelly of Cincinnati; dark obligations drawing him deeper into a shady world not of his own design – which make him loathe his place in it all the more. Ramsay vividly trades on Ames’ penchant for melancholy interwoven with sense of place, abetted by Jonny Greenwood’s score. Ramsay will be on hand to discuss her most recent project in a post-screening talk.
