Sloan Salon: Storytelling in the Age of Climate: Big Screen, Real Stakes

As climate change shapes our reality, it also transforms the stories we tell. Film Independent is proud to partner with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation for this year’s Sloan Salon – a virtual panel exploring how filmmakers can craft cinematic stories grounded in real science, without sacrificing creativity or impact.

Join us virtually as Peabody Award-winning moderator Wendy Calhoun (Station 19, Empire, Nashville) leads a dynamic conversation with writers Nicole Conlan (The Daily Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert) and Jessica Poter (Modern Family, Black-ish, WGA West Climate Action group); producer and Sloan Grantee Fiona Hardingham (Smoke Country); and Erica Lynn Rosenthal, Ph.D. (Director of Research, USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center).

Together, they will explore how filmmakers can seamlessly incorporate climate themes into compelling, cinematic storytelling in an organic way. Panelists will share how environmental realities can be woven into character, conflict and worldbuilding in ways that are entertaining, emotionally resonant and deeply human.
