Derek Nguyen

The Population

Derek Nguyen is a screenwriter, director and producer, and cofounder of The Population. His directorial feature debut The Housemaid (CJ Entertainment, Parasite) was released by IFC Films in 2018 and sold to 22 different territories around the world. An American adaption is heading to production in 2020, written by Oscar-winner Geoffrey Fletcher (Precious). Derek has received fellowships from the Sundance Institute’s Screenwriters Lab, the New York Foundation for the Arts, Tribeca Film Institute and IFP No Borders. Derek executive produced I Carry You With Me (Heidi Ewing, Sony Pictures Classics) and the forthcoming Catch the Fair One (Josef Kubota Wladyka). Derek was associate producer on Jennifer Fox’s The Tale, So Yong Kim’s Lovesong, Sarah Adina Smith’s Busterís mal Heart, Hannah Fidell’s Long Dumb Road, and Jamie Babbit’s Addicted to Fresno. As a business manager, Derek has worked at numerous companies and organizations that have supported the creation of hundreds of international films, TV programs, and literary works including Gamechanger Films, the Tribeca Film Institute, the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (The International Emmy Awards), IFP/New York, Arts at St. Ann’s and the Denise Marcil Literary Agency.
