An elderly couple’s deep bond is tested by the physical and emotional tolls of aging, leading them to find unexpected intimacy in the most awkward of moments.
Synopsis
Love is easy when everything about the other person is an exciting discovery. But when you’ve been married for 60 years, anything new or surprising about each other is a harbinger of worse things to come, and the love that is needed takes a new kind of strength.
Don and Sally (80’s) are the cliche “old married couple.” They’re short with each other and barely have any reason to talk. But there’s something new with Sally: she’s incontinent. She and Don are both pretending it’s not happening, burying the shame and dread of losing autonomy, and clinging to their familiar routine. But Don realizes that denial will only poison their few remaining years. So on a trip to the grocery store, he buys her diapers.
Sally hides the diapers, unwilling to face her current reality. Therefore Don puts on a pair and proudly wears them around the house. Sally screams, overcome by her embarrassment, so Don decides to pee in the diaper, right there in the kitchen. Sally’s fear changes to curiosity. They giggle about it like little kids. By walking towards their fear together, they release their shame and find their relationship renewed.
