Fresh from a world premiere engagement at the Telluride Film Festival, Heroin(e) and Long Shot, two compelling short documentaries on subjects of enormous social impact produced by streaming service Netflix. Set in the decaying town of Huntington, West Virginia, Heroin(e) examines the area’s ongoing battle with the opioid crisis. Among the combatants taking on drug addiction are three compassionate and resourceful women who refuse to surrender and, more importantly, are adamant about keeping the addicts they work with in recovery. This documentary on hope in the face of overwhelming odds is directed by Peabody Award-winner Elaine McMillion Sheldon (Hollow, Forager).

The topic of the oppressive weight of the criminal justice system on people of color is given an unusualand upliftingtwist in the short doc Long Shot, when a young Latino is arrested and charged with murder. His indefatigable attorney is convinced of his client’s innocence and hits every possible path to find evidence to clear his client, a road that finally leads to Dodger Stadium and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Director Jacob LaMendola delivers a tense and entertaining true story that also focuses on the importance of not giving up. Both filmmakers will answer questions after their films screen.
