Probably no one is more interested in the comedic proximity between common courtesy, the everyday world and violence than writer Steve Conrad, whose produced scripts include the 2005 Gore Verbinski-directed The Weather Man, 2008’s The Promotion and 2014’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Conrad’s deadpan, surrealist take on the way things can get pushed too far – and how a perceived slight can linger in the air for years – are at the heart of the plot-packed new series from Amazon, which follows the thread-by-thread unraveling of undercover operative John Tavner (Michael Dorman). Tavner is trying to keep breathing room between his own psyche, his actual family—which is overseen by a subtly bulling father (Terry O’Quinn)—and the sales force he infiltrates to do his international espionage.
